About this beach

Jacob Riis Park is the most natural-feeling beach in the city — broad sand and dunes inside Gateway National Recreation Area, named for the muckraking photographer who documented turn-of-the-century tenement life. The 1932 art-deco bathhouse anchors the eastern end; the western end fronts the Riis Park concession boardwalk.

Reach it via the Q35 bus from Flatbush Avenue–Brooklyn College (about 25 minutes from the subway), or by car via the Marine Parkway Bridge with paid parking lots A through D. Lifeguards staff the central section from late May through Labor Day; the eastern (clothing-optional) and western stretches are unguarded.

Wave height and water temperature on this page are read from NDBC buoy 44065; tide times come from the NOAA CO-OPS Jones Inlet station 8516385. The long-term monthly mean water temperature for this stretch of coast is 65°F (NDBC 44065 climatology); the current reading sits 6.0° below average.
