About this beach

Long Beach is a 2.3-mile barrier-island boardwalk city about 25 miles east of Manhattan, with year-round surf culture and the only LIRR station within walking distance of the Atlantic. Reconstructed after Sandy in 2012–13 with a hardened concrete boardwalk and new lifeguard stations, it's now the easiest swimmable ocean beach from the city by mass transit.

Day-pass beach access is $15 in season (free with proof of Long Beach residency); the LIRR runs hourly from Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal, ~52 minutes. Surfing is permitted year-round outside of the lifeguarded swim corridors.

Wave height and water temperature on this page are read from NDBC buoy 44065; tide times come from the NOAA CO-OPS Jones Inlet station 8516385. The long-term monthly mean water temperature for this stretch of coast is 65°F (NDBC 44065 climatology); the current reading sits 5.0° below average.
