About this beach
Robert Moses State Park sits at the western tip of Fire Island, the only stretch of the barrier island reachable by car. Five mile-long fields (numbered 2 through 5) front the Atlantic; the iconic 1858 Fire Island Lighthouse is a 0.75-mile boardwalk hike east of Field 5. Day-use parking is $10 in season.
It's the least-developed Long Island state beach — no boardwalk strip, no concert venue, just dunes and ocean. The barrier-island ride takes about 1h45 from midtown via the Long Island Expressway and the Robert Moses Causeway; Sayville LIRR plus the Fire Island ferries is an alternate for car-free visitors heading further east on the island.
Wave height and water temperature on this page are read from NDBC buoy 44025; tide times come from the NOAA CO-OPS Jones Inlet station 8516385. The long-term monthly mean water temperature for this stretch of coast is 73°F (NDBC 44065 climatology); the current reading sits 2.0° above average.
