What the full moon names mean

The monthly names — Wolf, Snow, Worm, Pink, Flower, Strawberry, Buck, Sturgeon, Corn, Hunter’s, Beaver, Cold — come from traditional North American almanac usage, a way of tracking the seasons by the monthly full moon. 2026 carries thirteen full moons because the 29.5-day lunar cycle is shorter than most calendar months, so May catches two: the second is a Blue Moon.

Two of 2026’s full moons pass through Earth’s shadow: a total lunar eclipse — a Blood Moon — at the March Worm Moon, and a deep partial eclipse at the August Sturgeon Moon. The December Cold Moon is a supermoon, reaching full phase near perigee.
